Take the Adrenaline Plunge with Riverside Outfitters

October 18th, 2010

The James River is a staple here in the Richmond, so we were excited to discover about the amazing activities available for our visitors. If you are a thrill seeking traveler, we suggest you check out Riverside Outfitters.

Guided tours are available for rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. There are different levels of the tours ranging from being perfect for families with younger children to the more experienced.

Breaking out on your own is an option to, by renting equipment. Comfortable oversized tubes can be rented for a relaxing float down the river. This is a perfect choice if you like things a little slower paced. The traditional canoes and kayaks can also be used to navigate the white rapids alone.

A unique sport called river boarding is perfect to try on the James. River boarding is achieved by using a board that looks similar to a boogie board but is beefed up around the chest area for protection and also has a handle attached so you can hold on and enjoy the ride. With fins on your feet and a helmet for protection, you navigate the bubbling whitewater.

If water isn’t your cup of tea, they offer mountain bikes for rent. Riding along the bank you get a different view of the nature surrounding the river. Also, seeing a bird’s eye view of the river is available through tree climbing seminars. With the recreational tree climbing seminar there is vertical climbs into the tree canopy, limb walks, high-elevation zip lines, canopy rope bridges, and plunging tree swings. No experience needed and appropriate for ages five to adult. Having a love of heights is definitely a necessity.

Prices vary, and increase by ten to fifteen dollars on the weekends for guided tours. Rentals vary on how many hours you would like to have the equipment for, they provide a free shuttle to take you to and from the river. They also offer special group rates and are open seven days a week. And don’t you worry about missing out on this as the weather gets cooler because they wetsuits and cold weather gear is of no extra charge.

We hope you bring your inner daredevil and take a leap of faith into the trees, or dive into the James. Visit their web site for more information on planning your next adventure.

See You Soon.
