Southern Tradition: Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ Festival

May 30th, 2011

Now that Memorial Day weekend has come and gone, the summer is in full swing here in Richmond. A Southern tradition of great brewed beer, bourbon at its finest and slow seasoned to perfection BBQ-  honestly, what more could you ask for?

June 4th at the Richmond Raceway Complex all of these Southern staples and more will be available for your tasting! The Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ Festival is a festival that travels across the East Coast bringing the South to parts of Maryland and New York. Your general admission ticket will have you in hog heaven tasting sixty different beers, forty different bourbons, and every different kind of BBQ out there. You will receive a souvenir glass as you enter the event that will allow you to stroll from tent to tent sipping on the best of the best, as you satisfy your hunger with BBQ.

Seminars are available in the Tasting Theater, which will give you the secrets of the Master Distillers, Brew Masters, and Grilling Kings or Queens. After the seminars, you will certainly be able to recreate the Festival in your own backyard this summer. There will be vendors on site so you can pick up exactly what you’re going to need to be THE Grilling Master in your neighborhood this summer. Tickets are available in advance and we do suggest grabbing them before because last year this was a sold out event!

We hope you check out what the South has to offer you!

Fidos After Five!

May 22nd, 2011

Let’s face it- our four legged friends love a beautiful garden, just as much as we do.

The good news? This summer, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is having a special event for man’s/woman’s best friend this summer, called Fidos after Five.

This special event will take place each month starting June 9th, continuing through July 14th and August 11th starting at five in the evening. You will be able to enjoy 40 acres of lush gardens and the mid-Atlantic’s only styled Conservatory.

This event is more than just spectacular gardens, flowers, plants, and trees. Wine tastings are also available in the Rose Garden from 6-8pm for an additional $10, with wines available for purchase by the glass and the bottle. They will also have selection of specialty beers to pair with your evening beverages sandwiches. Didn’t bring a picnic? Salads, and fruit and cheese trays are also available.

You can then enjoy your evening snack in the great outdoors with the amazing view of roses at tables, or you may bring your own blanket and enjoy picnic style. Because of the Summer season and of all its growing potential for the local farmers, each night there will be a tasting of a local food item. Some of these will include fruits, honey, cheeses, tomatoes, and gelato. We know your mouth is watering already!

The party will really get started at 6pm, with music and dancing in the Rose Garden featuring a variety of different entertainment from opera, jazz, bluegrass, and some tango and salsa dancing. To end your evening, we suggest browsing the Garden Shop with garden accents, books, jewelry and much more. Admission is $11 for adults, $7 for children, and $2 for your pet, which is donated to the SPCA. We hope you and your favorite four-legged friend enjoy the opportunity to explore the gardens.

RVA Music Night!

May 16th, 2011

Get your dancing shoes ready because Friday Cheers is featuring the best of the best in music that RVA has to offer. On Friday, May 27, Browns Island will be filled with the musical stylings of Three Sheets to the Wind, No BS! Brass Band and Long Arms.

At 6:3pm the first band will take the stage, so be sure to get there early to get close to the stage. Three Sheets to the Wind, is America’s #1 tribute to yacht rock that includes AM Gold and soft rock hits from the 1970s to the mid 1980s.  Perhaps we’re a bit biased (our very own Wedding Planner Mary-Catherine’s husband is the lead singer Captain Max Power!) but we’re particularly excited about this one!

Brass Band enjoys combining the spirit of New Orleans with original compositions and s mix of the 70’s and 80’s. And last but certainly not least Long Arms which is also a local band and favorite with a mix of indie, punk rock, country folk with a twang, with some pop mixed in.

This is sure to be a rocking good time, hope to see you there! Remember Friday Cheers does cost to get into this year so be sure to have $5 handy for the entrance fee.

And They’re Off! The Strawberry Hill Races

May 9th, 2011

Kentucky has their Derby, but Richmond has the Strawberry Hill Races at Colonial Downs, for all those who couldn’t quit make it all the way their way to Kentucky.

Starting at 11am on Saturday, May 21st at Colonial Downs, the horses will be preparing for there first run. This is the 75th year for the races and they are taking it back to the 70’s and paying homage to the Secretariat. So, think colorful sundresses, bouffant upswept hair, and open collard shirts. You also just might want to throw a hat into the mix too; it is horse racing after all! The gates will open and they will be off and running at 2:30pm and will continue on through the afternoon and evening.

There are a variety of different ticket choices available and they are also available at the gates. Make sure you bring a little cash to put your money down on the horse that you think will be in the winning circle! The excitement will be buzzing throughout the event, make sure you don’t miss out!

Richmond Wedding Photo Shoot

May 6th, 2011

Recently, we had the pleasure of collaborating with some fabulous Richmond Wedding Professionals on a photo shoot for Tiffanys Bridal.  In fact, you may have read about it earlier this week on Bob’s Blog or Emily’s Blog.

The day was a bit colder and rainier than we would have liked, but the models (and pros!) were troopers! See below for a few of our favorites from what was a memorable day at the Mansion.

Real Wedding: Caleb and Ashley

May 3rd, 2011

Well, it’s that time again- it’s wedding season here at Historic Mankin Mansion!  We have several fabulous events under our belts already and were THRILLED with James Linkowitz of Linkowitz Photography shared images from Caleb and Ashley’s recent rainy day wedding. If you didn’t have a chance to catch it, click here to read his take on the day.

We asked our very own wedding planner Mary-Catherine to tell us more about Caleb and Ashley’s Big Day:

Ashley and Caleb had envisioned delicate details of pale pink and black and white for their special day.  What they may not have expected was the dramatic photograph of an arbor of umbrellas over the ceremony.  James’ pictures captured the feeling of family and unity to see the guests appear as one under the many umbrellas.  When you embrace the unexpected you open yourself up to creating a very memorable day.  Ashley and Caleb trusted in our experience and planning and the result…something truly wonderful and quite bloggable!  Their wedding pictures will forever look unique and spark one-of-a-kind memories because of their very special rainy day.
Enjoy!

Dominion Riverrock is here!

May 2nd, 2011

Mark your calendars for May 13-14 on Brown’s Island as Dominion Riverrock, the two-day festival, celebrates Richmond river life.

Richmond is situated right on the James River, and the Dominion Riverrock showcases all of the possibilities of the River. This is an outdoor festival featuring spectacular athletes, musicians and even dogs.

On Friday, May 13, the party kicks off with performances by Big Gigantic and Perpetual Groove, as well as a 5k fun mud run, an acrobatic kayak, and freestyle bike competitions.  Saturday is another fun-filled, adrenalin rush day as well with The James River Scramble 10k trail run, mountain biking, kayaking, an Ultimate Air Dogs Competition, and much more. The event will end with the sounds of the Yonder Mountain String Band.

New to this year’s event is bouldering, which is free-style rock climbing, and stand up paddle boarding. Of course, like any good RVA festival food and other exhibits. This high-octane event is a must-see this season.
