As Heather and Brandon told us-

HISTORIC MANKIN MANSION – AMAZING

My husband and I met through mutual friends. It was literally love at first sight. We were engaged a year and a half later. I immediately started looking at different venues online and found Mankin Mansion. It was once again love at first sight! The grounds are gorgeous with brick pathways and candlelit lanterns everywhere.  From the wedding planners to the grounds-men, the staff is simply delightful! Our wedding was the first one for the year! May I say we were not expecting 16 tornadoes to touch down in Virginia. We moved our ceremony into the tent and it was magical! They made it out as if we were royalty. It could not have been any more intimate. Thank you to all of the staff at Historic Mankin Mansion for making our wonderful day AMAZING!

Now remember-this year’s blog series is going to be a bit different as each wedding will be featured on the Historic Mankin Mansion Blog and the top three posts with the most blog and Facebook comments will be selected as finalists.  Each wedding will receive one more feature and the one with the most Facebook and blog comments by the deadline will be the winner!  This year, we’re taking it up a notch as we will be hosting a contest along with it for a complimentary overnight room stay at the Mansion, as well as a gift certificate to one of Paula and Martin’s favorite restaurants in town.

Best of 2011: Megan and Brandon!

January 20th, 2012

Today, we’re back with our Best of 2011 series, where we get to revisit some of our favorite weddings from last season. Today, we’re thrilled to share the wedding of Megan and Brandon! Just WAIT until you see these lovely wedding details.

As Megan told us-

After a long, year-and-a-half engagement, I married my best friend at the Historic Mankin Mansion.   On October 1st, 2011, Brandon and I stood in front of our dearest friends and family and vowed to love, comfort and honor each other. It was almost 11 years ago that I met Brandon, and knew in my 15 year-old heart that he was forever the guy for me. Now, my dream had finally come true: I was marrying my best friend. Our wedding was nothing short of perfection. I had a vision of what I called early on “vintage meets modern romance,” (with some thoughtful DIY touches thrown in for good measure, of course). I knew from day one I wanted grey (I think it was a successful color, and now I’m borderline-obsessed with it for EVERYTHING). Mary-Catherine understood my vision from the beginning, and felt like a friend we’d known for years. I needed her reassurance on more than one occasion, but most importantly she made the whole process of planning what it should be: fun!  She, as well as Paula, Martin and the entire HMM staff couldn’t have done a better job throughout our long journey, and our wedding day was no exception. We felt like they ‘had our back,’ in a sense, should something go wrong. With so many emotions and excitement going on, it was comforting to know they had everything under control.

I knew from the minute I discovered this venue online that it was “the one,” and while driving home from our first tour, as my parents, Brandon and I discussed what we should do, I promised them “we will not regret our decision if we choose Mankin Mansion,” and I was right. Today, I couldn’t be happier with the man I love, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to marry him at the Historic Mankin Mansion. Brandon and I, as well as my parents would like to thank the HMM staff for their tireless efforts, and for making our wedding such a magical and unforgettable experience. With that, I’d like to say get ready, because a lot of single ladies at my wedding fell in love with your venue! ;)

Best of 2011: Jaimie and Christopher!

January 18th, 2012

Today, we’re back with our Best of 2011 series, where we get to revisit some of our favorite weddings from last season. We enjoyed revisiting Blair and Nick’s day on Wednesday and today, we’re back with Jaimie and Christopher!

As Jaimie told us-

If the saying, “Rain on your wedding day means good luck,” is true, then my husband and I are very lucky. Our wedding day started off like any bride’s worst nightmare.  As my soon to be husband at the time and I woke up, the first thing we heard was little droplets hitting the roof of our honeymoon suite. I immediately went into panic mode. If it weren’t for Mary-Catherine and the other staff at the Mankin Mansion I probably would have had a mental breakdown! They assured us that everything would work out and we would have the wedding day we always dreamed of.

As hard as it was to believe them at the time, they were completely right.  We had a delicious breakfast with our bridal party, a relaxing massage, and then separated into different cottages to get ready for our wedding. Spending that time getting ready with my mother, sister, soon to be mother in law, and best friends is a memory I will always cherish. My gorgeous bouquet, along with my bridesmaids, was brought to my room and I knew it was getting close to 6 pm, the start of our ceremony. I took one last look out the window, expecting to see the dreaded rain, but instead I caught a glimpse of the sun attempting to break through the clouds.  At that moment, I knew my grandmothers and other passed loved ones were with us on our wedding day.

As family, friends and guests started to arrive, the sun pushed out even more. As my father escorted me down the aisle, I stared into the love of my life’s eyes, and knew I was the luckiest bride in the world. Everything worked out perfectly. Our dachshunds Walter and Winifred, ring bearer and flower girl, made it all the way down the aisle without biting or lifting their leg on anyone or anything. Everyone loved the idea of a wine box ceremony, where we put a letter to each other expressing our hopes and dreams in a wine box that would be sealed until our 5th anniversary. The photo booth captured all of our guests and made a lasting memory for everyone. Our guests dined on Italian food and delicious cupcakes topped with eatable pearls and chocolate dachshunds, while Chris and I danced our first dance as a married couple. A slideshow of memories captured from when we met at age 16 until now played in the background. Our friends and family then joined us on the dance floor as we celebrated the night away.

The night ended with sparklers and a song that sums up everything we both felt on our wedding day, “Today Was A Fairytale”.

Best of 2011: Danielle and Michael!

January 16th, 2012

Today, we’re back with our Best of 2011 series, where we get to revisit some of our favorite weddings from last season. Today, we’re thrilled to share the wedding of Danielle and Michael!

We knew from the first time we met with the couple that this was going to be a party filled with fabulous music and personal touches to pay tribute to the heritage.. and boy were we right!

As Danielle and Michael told us-

We could envision our wedding the first time we visited Mankin Mansion.  Dusk settling over the brick gazebo, the lanterns lighting the pathways with a soft glow …the scene was enchanting.  The actual day was even better.  As we were welcomed by the smiling face of our wedding planner, we knew we wouldn’t have to worry about a thing.  All around us were each of the little touches we had spent months planning, come to life:  the orchids on each table, the collage of our families in the parlor, the songs we had chosen with friends in mind.  Music is very important to us both, so to make our Salvadoran guests feel at home, we asked Martin, Mankin’s DJ, to include some of our favorite Latin songs.  He arranged a perfect mix, just as we had anticipated.

The grounds themselves offered the perfect setting for an evening to celebrate the joining of two families.  Grandparents sat near the gardens quietly telling their stories, young cousins put the life-sized chess board to use, and friends congregated around the gazebo where cocktails were being served. For weeks afterward, countless guests told us it was the best wedding they’d ever been to’… and we couldn’t agree more.

Best of 2011: Alex and Scot!

January 13th, 2012

Today, we’re back with our Best of 2011 series, where we get to revisit some of our favorite weddings from last season. Today, we’re thrilled to share the wedding of Alex and Scot! Alex and Scot was one of our long distance couples this year and we had a blast planning with them.

Alex told us-

The whole day was wonderful. Everything turned out better than we could have ever imagined. Historic Mankin Mansion is such a beautiful place on its own, but with the touch of the employees that worked there, it became our dream come true.

One of the things we loved most about Historic Mankin Mansion was how well the other companies worked in conjunction with the Mansion. The photographer, caterer and florists had all worked with the mansion before so the ceremony and reception went on without a hitch. Another favorite of ours was the reception. At first, we thought the time allotted for the reception wasn’t enough; we had to end at 10 p.m. and the ceremony started at 5. But Historic Mankin Mansion ensured us it was plenty of time so we put our trust in them and we are glad we did because it turned out wonderfully. Everything ran so smoothly that it felt like the reception lasted forever.

One of the highlights of the evening was when we made our grand entrance into the reception tent. We wanted to do something out of the ordinary and decided to enter to the song Chariots of Fire by Vangelis. If the name of the song doesn’t ring a bell, it’s what just about every movie plays whenever there is a slow motion scene….and we did just that! We ran into the tent in slow motion, Scot even fake tripped. We were so nervous this would be a failure but it really turned out amazing and people LOVED it. With that entrance and other small touches to the wedding, the whole evening turned out just how we wanted it: fun and a good laugh. Without the help of Meghan and her staff we would’ve been lost. It may seem that any professional can make these things happen, but Historic Mankin Mansion really impressed us with their professionalism and how smooth everything ran. We got our fairytale wedding thanks to them!

Best of 2011: Erica and David!

January 11th, 2012

Today, we’re back with our Best of 2011 series, where we get to revisit some of our favorite weddings from last season. Today, we’re thrilled to share the wedding of Erica and David!

First- a bit from Erica about their special day-

I was definitely one of those girls who grew up planning her wedding. From the beginning, I knew that I didn’t want an outdoor ceremony (I’m far too controlling of a person to allow the weather to dictate my Big Day) and I knew that I didn’t want a tent reception. I wanted something totally original–a warehouse on the river or a reception in a big, open space. And then I went on a tour of Mankin Mansion. I put down my deposit the next day and knew that Martin, Paula and all of the planners at Mankin would make our wedding the most incredible day of our lives. And they did—at an outdoor ceremony and tent reception. It couldn’t have been more perfect.

Every time I went to see Mary Catherine for a planning meeting, I got butterflies in my stomach because I was so excited. And when the day finally arrived and my bridesmaids and I drove up to the Mansion, it took my breath away. My vision was coming to life before my very eyes—from the English garden theme, the welcome gazebo complete with a Polaroid station, to the amazing flowers and vintage color palette. I wanted to create a unique experience for our guests. Dave and I are both really into music so, we made CDs of every important song we played that night as favors, the tables were all named after those songs and the escort cards were attached to keys hanging on a shabby chic style door with a sign that read “Our Soundtrack—find your lyrics.”  All of the months of planning had indeed paid off. When the ceremony rolled around, I was ready. I was ready to hear the soundtrack to our wedding (and our life together) begin. I was ready to walk down the aisle to The Graduate’s “Pull Me In” and to see Dave at the altar. And after the ceremony, I was ready to throw a big party for all of my favorite people. However, Mother Nature had something to say about that.

Right before the reception was to begin, what I can only imagine was a monsoon swept through the grounds of Mankin and held my new husband and I captive under the brick pergola. Complete with sideways rain, thunder and lightening, this storm was serious. What was that I said about not wanting the weather to dictate my Big Day?! I had planners on all sides of me with umbrellas trying to shield me from the rain and I could not believe that after almost 30 years of being a control freak, I just did not care. This was our day and not even a little tornado was going to ruin it! We finally made our way into the tent and began our first dance together as husband and wife, to the tune of booming thunder.

The rest of the night was a beautiful, amazing blur. It truly was everything I could have asked for. I had people tell me things like “I felt like I was in a movie the whole night,” “I’m not as excited about my wedding now because I don’t think it can live up to yours,” and “That was the best night of my life.” I’m glad that Dave and I had fun but most of all I’m thankful that, regardless of one of the most violent storms of the summer, we created such a memorable night for our family and friends. We couldn’t have done it without everyone who works at Mankin Mansion and for that I am forever grateful.
