Let Them Eat Cake (Or Pie)!

May 28th, 2014

There is nothing traditional about the wedding cakes trending in 2014.  Far from the wedding cakes of the past, we’re seeing today’s wedding cakes make a design statement all their own.  We at Historic Mankin Mansion are excited to see which of these trends our brides embrace in the coming months.  Incorporate one or several!

Trend #1: The Naked Cake Perfect for spring and summer weddings, the naked caked doesn’t take itself too seriously.  Its “homemade” feel will add charm and appropriate cake décor to any rustic wedding.  Decorate with fresh flowers or fruit to complete the look. Trend #2: Colors Adding color to your wedding cake is an easy way to make it fit into your overall  theme and décor.  Metallics are popular in 2014, and undoubtedly will get a lot of attention.  Looking for something a little less bold?  Pastel wedding cakes are also popular in shades of peach, robin’s egg blue or mint. Trend #3: Ombre You’ve seen the ombre trend in hair and fashion, but now you can incorporate it into your wedding cake for an unexpected impact on your big day!  Select a subtle ombre or an in-your-face color array to make a big statement, the choices are endless. Trend #4: Texture You can add texture to your wedding cake in 2014 in a variety of ways. Depending on the look you are going for, your cake could have a vintage or rustic “homemade” feel like the naked wedding cake, or be very chic and glamorous with edible ruffles, lace or pearl detailing. Trend #5: The Non-Cake Wedding Cake Not a big cake fan?  No problem!  It’s your day; consider surprising your guests with a memorable dessert instead.  A big trend in 2014 for the non-cake lovers: pie!  Like the trend of having personal sized desserts (like cupcakes) for your guests?  Have individual-sized mini pies available for all to enjoy. Six Summer Wedding Tips to Keep Your Guests Cool

May 19th, 2014

With summer on our heels, it’s high time to start preparation for making sure guests are cool and comfortable for your wedding festivities. Here are six simple summer wedding solutions that will help keep the heat at bay for your upcoming wedding!

  1. Sunglasses- After spending the morning primping, you certainly don’t want your guests’ eyes squinting as you saunter down the aisle in your lovely gown. Sunglasses are the perfect solution for outdoor weddings, especially for those guests who forget their own shades. To complement your theme, make sure they are in your wedding colors!
  2. Flip-flops- Not only is this a fun way to cool-off in the summer heat, but it brings a whole new meaning to putting on your dancing shoes! Place a unique sign with sayings such as “Kick Off Your Heels” or “Save Your Soles” and it will become the perfect personal touch for this summer solution.
  3. Program Fans- A modern twist on your traditional wedding programs – have a wooden stick glued to the inside to make this keepsake a multipurpose wonder as a fan to help your friends and family cool off.
  4. Icy Refreshments- Creating your own label for bottles of water is a great way to add personality to your wedding details and will certainly keep your guests hydrated.
  5. Sunscreen- Sunscreen is quite often the one thing wedding guests wish they had slipped in their bag so anticipate this need by having a nice basket of sunscreen readily available. Your guests will appreciate the thoughtful gesture.
  6. Chilled Towels or Mist Sprayers- Work with your venue or caterer to have someone greet guests into the reception with chilled towels or miniature spray bottles filled with cool water. Your guests will certainly be thankful for this refreshing treat!

Happy planning!
