Wedding Lounges: Where Creativity and Comfort Meet

October 27th, 2014

We just love the latest trend of wedding lounges for your big day! Creating a one-of-a-kind wedding lounge area at your reception could help guests relax, and also provide a great photo backdrop for you and your sweetheart.  Relatively easy to piece together, lounges can be myriad, or single, depending on the amount of space available at your venue, whether indoor or outdoor.

The lounge will inspire your artistic freedom to blossom as you decide what will be included. Simply put, a lounge can include one couch, some chairs, a coffee table or chest, a bouquet of flowers, candles and some side tables.  It is a great opportunity to create a space that resonates with and adds to your wedding theme.

Photos of the bride and groom could be set on the table for decoration, and for guests, props for photos could be located within the lounge area. It really could not be easier to customize your chic and trendy rest stop. If you do not have access to furniture, or are just not satisfied with it, you can always look into renting at shops such as Paisley & Jade, a local Richmond vintage eclectic furniture rental shop located in Scott’s Addition.

As you are providing a space for your guests to relax and rest their feet, sip on a cocktail, and take it all in, you are also ensuring a happier day for you. Sure, it is your day, but it is shared with those you have invited, so why not appease both parties. While you are having the time of your life on the dance floor, your guests will be smiling in the lounge, wishing the wedding was a weekend affair!

Wedding Trend: Designating an Instagram Hashtag for Guests

October 6th, 2014

Have you ever thought about how when you invite a guest to your wedding, you are also inviting their smartphone?

Have no fear, as there are actually many advantages to this- just consider the example of Instagram. Besides being a free app on Apple and Android devices, it’s easy and fun to use.

So what does this mean for your to do list? Designating a wedding-specific hashtag for your guests to use throughout the festivities is a great way to add a bit of organization to the endless photos taken at a wedding.

As for what the hashtag says, it’s all up to you! Be as creative or as simple as you like. It can be a hybrid of your names (first and/or last names), a cute saying with the date, or just about anything you want it to be. Just make sure prior to announcing the hashtag that you search Instagram to see if it has been claimed. If it hasn’t, then you’re all set. If it has, then you simply have to go back to the drawing board. That’s one benefit to creativity- it lessens the odds of duplication!

Once you come to a decision, you’ll want to make sure that guests are aware of it so they can use it. For example, consider printing it on the program, or even post a little sign that guests will pass as they enter the reception.

Selecting a special hashtag for guests promotes their engagement. Additionally, while you can’t beat the gorgeous images your professional photographer will take, it could be fun to see the day from your guests’ perspective.

On a final note, just remember that all guests won’t feel inclined to jump on their devices. Many individuals enjoy being present in the moment without the distraction of technology.

And as always, we wish you a wonderful wedding day!

Keep Wedding Guests Engaged

June 23rd, 2014

Think back to the best weddings you’ve been to…surely they all had their own unique spin! We bet those weddings all had one consistent theme weaving throughout- keeping guests engaged and entertained.  Stay true to you and keep it special in your own way, but remember your guests should have fun too!

When out-of-town guests arrive

Design a special welcome bag or basket for your out-of-town guests when they arrive to make them feel at home and give them a taste of what the area has to offer.  Include local goods like wines, breads or jams and brochures on local treasures and attractions.  Your guests will be impressed that you thought about keeping them entertained outside of the wedding events!

The ceremony

Keep it short and sweet (if possible), but don’t cut out cultural traditions! For any and all components you’re passionate about, take the time to explain what these traditions mean in your wedding program so guests know the backstory.

The reception

Undoubtedly the reception is the most entertaining part of the whole day! Take the opportunity to involve your guests in anywhere from activities to décor.  We love when our Historic Mankin Mansion couples use personal details on escort cards or display photos of your family throughout the reception. Want to have a photo booth area?  A fresh and special component is having your guests hold a chalkboard in which they can provide advice to the happy couple.  Lastly, and this is a simple one, just have some fun games for your guests!  Lawn games like corn hole and even “I Spy” can entertain guests for hours.

Happy Planning!

Modernize Wedding Traditions

June 16th, 2014

Let’s face it, most of us follow wedding traditions but have no idea where they started or why they still exist today! Sometimes we even incorporate traditions today because they are just that, traditions.  In 2014, a fresh take on some of these wedding traditions certainly couldn’t hurt.

Tradition #1: The bride wears a full veil and a white wedding dress

The full veil was meant to ward off evil spirits.  These days, brides are going for shorter, flirty veils or even forgoing a veil altogether! The white wedding dress tradition started simply because Queen Victoria wore one to her wedding. Feeling bold? Don’t let this tradition stop you from wearing a little color! Adventurous brides are wearing scarlet or florals on their big day.  Looking to make a subtle statement?  Go for blush, champagne or off white.

Tradition #2: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue

Coming from an Olde English rhyme, this tradition is meant to bring good luck for the new couple; you can still incorporate this tradition without seeming old-fashioned.  From blue shoes to your grandmother’s pearl necklace and new diamond studs – the options are endless!

Tradition #3: Tiered wedding cake

This tradition started in Medieval England.  Mix things up by having several single tier cakes (perhaps in different flavors!) or nix the cake altogether for pie, cheesecake, crème brulee, even French macaroons!

Tradition #4: Seating arrangements

Traditionally, seating arrangements are made for both the ceremony and the reception.  Go for a more casual feel by telling guests to sit wherever they please via cute signs with sayings such as “Choose a seat, not a side.  We’re all family once the knot is tied” to use during the ceremony and “Come as you are, stay as long as you can.  We’re all family, so no seating plan” for the reception.

Tradition #5: Throwing rice

Throwing rice at the bride and groom was meant to bring fertility.  Try something a little more modern like birdseed, flower petals, confetti, or do a special send-off with sparklers.

We here at Historic Mankin Mansion can’t wait to see how our brides and grooms incorporate the modern take on an old tradition on their big day!

Happy Planning!

Wedding Trends: Light Up The Night

June 9th, 2014

Looking for a fresh, fun and intriguing visual element to add to your reception décor?  Look no further than light up marquee signs to create the atmosphere of your dreams!  Perfect for chic, vintage or glamorous weddings in 2014, you can incorporate either vintage marquee signs or even make your own.  What we especially like is that they make the perfect backdrop for pictures all night long and are useful for directing your guests where to go for specific wedding activities.

Let Them Eat Cake (Or Pie)!

May 28th, 2014

There is nothing traditional about the wedding cakes trending in 2014.  Far from the wedding cakes of the past, we’re seeing today’s wedding cakes make a design statement all their own.  We at Historic Mankin Mansion are excited to see which of these trends our brides embrace in the coming months.  Incorporate one or several!

Trend #1: The Naked Cake Perfect for spring and summer weddings, the naked caked doesn’t take itself too seriously.  Its “homemade” feel will add charm and appropriate cake décor to any rustic wedding.  Decorate with fresh flowers or fruit to complete the look. Trend #2: Colors Adding color to your wedding cake is an easy way to make it fit into your overall  theme and décor.  Metallics are popular in 2014, and undoubtedly will get a lot of attention.  Looking for something a little less bold?  Pastel wedding cakes are also popular in shades of peach, robin’s egg blue or mint. Trend #3: Ombre You’ve seen the ombre trend in hair and fashion, but now you can incorporate it into your wedding cake for an unexpected impact on your big day!  Select a subtle ombre or an in-your-face color array to make a big statement, the choices are endless. Trend #4: Texture You can add texture to your wedding cake in 2014 in a variety of ways. Depending on the look you are going for, your cake could have a vintage or rustic “homemade” feel like the naked wedding cake, or be very chic and glamorous with edible ruffles, lace or pearl detailing. Trend #5: The Non-Cake Wedding Cake Not a big cake fan?  No problem!  It’s your day; consider surprising your guests with a memorable dessert instead.  A big trend in 2014 for the non-cake lovers: pie!  Like the trend of having personal sized desserts (like cupcakes) for your guests?  Have individual-sized mini pies available for all to enjoy.
