Richmond Wedding: Julie and Nik

March 24th, 2014

Mankin Mansion couples never cease to amaze us with all of the creative and unique ideas they plan for their wedding. Julie and Nik pulled out all the stops for their big day and we are thrilled to share their Richmond wedding with you!

One of our favorite details has to be the groomsmen’s superhero t-shirts (worn under their tuxedos) and their matching cuff links. Everyone in the bridal party was full of enthusiasm, which truly set the tone for Julie and Nik’s perfect day. Without a doubt, this darling duo had a lovely wedding and we couldn’t wait to share a few of our favorite photos. Just wait until you see how stunning Julie looks :)

Congraulations to Julie and Nik!

Many thanks to Seth Roberts Photography for sharing these beautiful photos with us!

Your Perfect Wedding Cocktail

March 3rd, 2014

Thinking about the perfect signature cocktail for your wedding?

We here at the Mansion love this sort of personal touch. Before making the leap, here are a few considerations to keep in mind:

  1. Theme: Allow the drink to introduce your guests to the theme for your wedding reception. Bubbles would complement a glam theme while a spiked lemonade or sweet tea cocktail would be perfect for a traditional southern fete.
  2. Season: You’ll want to select a drink that perfectly pairs with the weather as well. Consider cinnamon, cranberry, or apple pie flavors for the fall, or something light with a hint of citrus for the summer.
  3. History: Want to share your story with attendees? Say it with the cocktail you enjoyed on your first date together. Did you meet in college? Consider incorporating your school colors with a sugar rim, or fun straw.
  4. Go local: Show a little local love by selecting a craft beer or wine in your region. Virginia is home to a wealth of vineyards and breweries- your guests will no doubt appreciate the special touch.
  5. Glassware: It’s not just about the mixology- every great cocktail needs a fabulous glass. Think beyond the norm with vintage glasses and mason jars.

There are a number of ways to personalize your Big Day. A fun, creative beverage menu will no doubt delight your attendees. With the above considerations in mind, you are on your way to a memorable signature drink!

HMM in the News: Richmond Weddings Magazine

February 10th, 2014

We were honored when asked to host this exquisite inspiration shoot, and now we are excited to share that it was recently featured in the 2014 Richmond Weddings Magazine issue!

It was certainly a team effort to create this “Snow White’s Winter Wedding” stylized shoot. Elegant Party Plans designed this set from beginning to end and enlisted the help of Green Flamingo to create these lovely floral designs! All of the photos were perfectly captured by Shalese Danielle Photography.

Here are a few of our favorite photos of this whimsical, woodland shoot! We hope you love them as much as we do!

Three cheers to everyone who worked so hard to make this inspiration shoot such a successful. And, many thanks to our friends at Richmond Weddings for this feature!

November 13th, 2013

We are thrilled to announce that 100 Layer Cake recently featured a Midsummer Night’s Dream Wedding photo shoot, which took place here at the Mansion!

The photo shoot was initially designed to be a “networkshop” for veteran and newbie photographers, an idea put together by Nikki Santerre Photography and V.A. Photography. The ultimately selected the theme of a Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was a surprise to photographers upon arrival. See the beautiful photos taken here.

Special thanks to 100 Layer Cake for this opportunity and congratulations to Nikki Santerre Photography and V.A. Photography on the successful event!

First Dance Songs

November 13th, 2012

The first dance for a couple has to be one of our favorite moments when sharing the day with our brides and grooms- you can just feel the love in the air! We enjoy hearing all of the wonderful song choices that the couples make and believe us when we say that we have heard close to them all! Today, we thought it would be fun to share some unique favorites that will no doubt catch your guests by surprise.

We love Etta James’ song “At Last” just as much as the next person so we found something from the 60’s with a blues vibe that your guests will love! Sam Cooke’s song “That’s Where It’s At” is a love song that will make your heart melt.

“Lovesong” by The Cure has been covered by quite a few artists in the past but our favorite rendition has to be Adele’s. Her “Lovesong” has a magical and romantic feel that will certainly set the tone for the evening.

Joshua Radin and Ingrid Michaelson have a lovely song called “Lovely Tonight” that is the perfect indie tune to dance the night away to. This is sure to be a song that most of your guests have not heard before, but will become a favorite!

John Legend has the perfect 21st century soulful sound that is ideal for a wedding. His song “So High” wins our vote for most swoon worthy song.

And last, but certainly not least, we’d like to give a nod to Virginia with Dave Matthews Band’s song “You & Me.” The song starts out slowly and then picks up a bit near the end, which is perfect if you’d like to invite your guests to join in!

What first dance songs are you considering for you big day? Feel free to share in the comments!

Bridal Market Spring 2013

October 30th, 2012

Bridal Market might be one of the most exciting times for everyone in the wedding business. Imagine tons of ruffles, tulle, sparkle and seeing all the trends before they hit the stores! We knew we had you at ruffles! It took us awhile to narrow down our favorites to just a few given the many amazing designers and swoon worthy gowns!

One trend that is sweeping the runways is color from pink (a la Jessica Timberlake), crimson and shades of grey. This Watters gown with a beautiful mermaid silhouette and sweet heart neckline is a trendy take on a classic style. Oh, did we mention the wedding veil decked out with floating rhinestones?

Elaborate backs to gowns are also a big hit and are beautiful for guests to admire while you say your vows. This ReemAcra is donned with crystals placed on a light tulle fabric to give the illusion that they have been placed on your skin. With the mermaid silhouette and bright white adornments it is the perfect gown for a winter wedding.

Full sleeves were all the rage in the past season and we can thank the lovely Kate Middleton for that. This season, you can achieve the same look with the more modern feel of a cap sleeve. Amsale got the look just right with this fitted gown in lace with a tulle train, which has a modern but timeless feel.

Vera Wang brought back the two R’s (ruffles and romance!) and we couldn’t be more in love!  The fitted top, ruffled bottom and cream color is perfection but we didn’t expect anything less from Mrs. Vera Wang.

Guest Book Alternatives

October 4th, 2012

A guest book is a wonderful keepsake for you and your husband to have for years to come! There are so many fun ways to make your guest book a little more exciting and up to date, and here are a few of our favorites!

We have been seeing everyone on Pinterest writing on everything from coffee mugs to plates and we love this idea for a guest book. You can purchase several different shapes and sizes of plates for your guests to sign with Sharpie markers that coordinate with your wedding colors. When you get home from the wedding, bake the plates in the oven at 350 degrees and they are ready to be used or displayed.

We all remember Mad Libs from when we were kids; you know those funny stories you would make by adding a few nouns and verbs here and there. Well they are making a comeback for weddings and they are still full of laughs. You can create your own or you can find customizable ones on Etsy!

These adorable little books give your guests a chance to share memories, advice and their future wishes for the happy couple! You can make several small books that are entitled with questions for the guests to answer, they can pick one or as many as they would like. You can display the books in your home and get them out every once in awhile when you are looking for some advice or to reminisce.

A scrapbook is a great way for your guests to get creative and involved in the wedding day. Photo booths are a fun addition to any party and your guests can take their photos and place them into a book and decorate a page with words of wisdom or just congratulations to the bride and groom. Be sure on the table to have plenty of colorful markers, stamps, tape and anything else your crafty heart desires!

Are you using Pinterest to inspire your wedding? If not join in on the fun HERE!
